Lumos 2006 - I went, I saw, I conquered!

Just in case you hadn't heard, HPEF is back on the west coast this summer with our next conference - AZKATRAZ - set to take place in San Francisco from July 17 - 21, and yes, that means it starts the day that HBP opens in theaters.

The website is up at Azkatraz.com and HP2009.org, and here's a few things that are on the agenda:

1. Line party and a-minute-after-midnight showing of HBP on July 17 only a few blocks from the con hotel
2. A Wrock Around the Rock concert on Friday night from 7 til 11 in San Francisco Bay, featuring The Remus Lupins, Brian from Draco & the Malfoys, Ministry of Magic and more! (Click here for the Wrock FAQ)
3. Creativity Is Magic day at ZEUM on Monday, July 20 - you can rent a video studio. do some Karaoke, or make a claymation short!
4. Our CFP deadline is still a few weeks away - Learn how to submit to present a paper, or moderate a panel or a round table!

Hope to see as many friends from Lumos again this summer! To keep up to date with our news, watch azkatraz and to participate in the "community" community, friend kickin_ascendio!

Vendor Warning: Fairy Tales & Dragon Scales [Mar. 7th, 2007|09:49 am]
Lumos 2006 - I went, I saw, I conquered!

tapestrymlp
I am cross-posting this from the hp_costuming community.

It really pains me to post this, but I don't feel there's any choice at this point. In recent months there have been several people that have had, or are continuing to have, trouble with orders they've placed at Fairy Tales & Dragon Scales, http://www.fairytalesdragonscales.com. The proprieter, Jasmine, is not responding to repeated emails, phone calls or snail mail letters. Costume orders are not being filled despite the fact that payment has already been made in full months before.

I am posting this warning for several reasons: Fairy Tales & Dragon Scales (FTDS) is still listed as a vendor at Phoenix Rising and I know that the company is frequently recommended to people looking for custom robes. More than one person has confirmed not receiving their items after payment and the impossibility of getting a response from Jasmine after repeated contact attempts.

I ordered my robes for the Lumos convention from FTDS. They arrived only days before the convention which had me really nervous but they did arrive and they were gorgeous. Based on that, I recommended FTDS to a friend when he wanted robes for PR. He placed his order and paid in full, $177, for the robes back in August 2006. They still have not arrived. Email communication has been spotty to nonexistent from Jasmine.

I won't go into all the details because that would take a novel, but let's just say my friend has made super-human efforts to contact Jasmine. He has called her home, emailed her from multiple email addresses, emailed both of her business email addresses and even contacted a fellow vendor she has shared booth space with in the past. Jasmine has shown a consistent pattern of lieing and non-response. She has lied throughout this entire process, saying the robes were ready when they weren't, saying she'd send them this day or that or claiming that my friend had made changes to the order when he didn't.

I would strongly urge anyone that is having these issues with FTDS to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and if you have already paid for your robes, have not received them and can not contact Jasmine - file a police report. This is theft. There is no pretty way to phrase that.

UPDATE: the oh-so-wonderful Aurora Celeste was kind enough to share a link to a LJ entry she made about different options for those that have been scammed. Anyone that has been scammed by FTDS please go take a look, there's a lot of good info here: http://auroraceleste.livejournal.com/117387.html. PayPal requires notice within 45 days for any claim/complaint about a transaction. Credit Cards require notice within 60 days as do most banks. I'm fairly certain anyone that has been ripped off by FTDS is way past those dates but just in case there's the info. Please share this info with anyone else that might need it. Let's make sure others in the fandom aren't ripped off as well.

Lumos 2006 - I went, I saw, I conquered!

I'm Blue, and I'd like to pimp out a new LJ group for Prophecy 2007. It's not a group for information. It's place to meet new people and make new friends. If you'd like to join, go here, prophecy_2007

Membership is open to anybody who wants to join.

I just thought that it would be cool to get to know some of your fellow attendees before the message board opens.

If any of you who join, please feel free to spread the word. The more the members, the merrier.

FINALLY! I got all my photos together, named them all and have them linked to a site so all can see. It took me longer than I anticpated because my dorky self named all th epictures, then hit the "sort photos by name" button Oh shit, I need to go through ALL the pictures and RENAME them! So, that took me a couple of days! But at last, all 937 (or so) pictures from Las Vegas during the Lumos Symposium.

Day one (travel, Welcoming Feast, Draco and Harry concerts): http://www.saobart.com/fam_pages/Lumos%20day%201/index.html

Day two (Water Quidditch, Night Classes): http://www.saobart.com/fam_pages/Lumos%20day%202/index.html

I'm lovin' all these Lumos updates...so much so, that I probably won't write a full one of my own!

Thanks everybody for all the pics--especially since my camera got lost in NYC...I TOLD it to keep me in sight!

Does anyone know how to contact the Lumos artist "Susan" who made the Hogwarts Graffiti and tea cups and Weasley Clock? I'm trying to find her. I'd appreciate any help! :)

Well, figured this was a little over due, so here goes the Lumos update. I have pics on my Shutterfly account and once I get them organized, I'll be posting links. Needless to say, I had a BLAST at Lumos!! I can't wait until PR.

hehe

I stayed in Orlando with lord__voldemort and got to hang out with Erin and Pattie, which rocked. Missed them all from TWH, which rocked too :D We did some crazy cosplaying with HP and Pirates, which was a lot of fun.

Anyways, here we go :D

LUMOS!Collapse )

Highlights from Lumos:

** Meeting Makani (you are one of the best artists I know!) and being able to show her the dress I made based off her work, and just talking with her in general.

** Seeing everyone, old friends and new

** SOXFAX!

** Pretending to be an Australian school group on the strip

** Getting a HUGE ASS drink from Kahunaville and enjoying it to thy fullest

** Pure RANDOM cosplaying

** Hanging out with my roomies

** Being the Irish Quidditch team!

** Seeing Melody do the Irish jig and try to click her heels as an Leprachaun

** Wearing ALL my costumes, somehow, in the course of only a few days.

** Re-enactments

** Being fan-girled when I was Draco. So amusing, loved it

** Playing Spin the Wand with Melissa of TLC hehe

** NUMA NUMA (stole that one from you, Crystina :P, but it's SOO true)

** Butter and Pedro

** Hanging out with an AWESOME group of people

** Music videos (if you were there, you'll know what I'm talking about :P )

** The Bludger named Patrick! LOLZ

the guardian article [Aug. 6th, 2006|03:05 am]
Lumos 2006 - I went, I saw, I conquered!

upstart_crow
Because I'm a journalist myself, and because I think journalists have a responsibility to correct others in our profession (no matter the quality of their newspaper) when they disregard fact and admit to not having done their homework, I've responded to the article here. If you want to read it, I'd be flattered.

For the record, I was the one who did the paper on HP and journalism which, according to her, had no more substance than to say "Cornelius Fudge is a very bad man". I will be making my paper available when my website is operational, so you yourselves may judge the quality of my research.

- JoSelle

Edit: Had another thought, for anyone who may want to email her or the Observer-Guardian about the article. I understand people's anger and hurt, and I share it, as some of her misinformation was directed at me. But speaking as a journalist myself (and one who has delt with her share of angry emails), I want to encourage everyone *not* to respond to her with anger, insults or vitriol...as tempting as that may be. Responding as calmly and rationally as possible will do more in convincing the paper that they were wrong about us than yelling will. One should always take care to respond with light, not with heat.

Hi everyone,

I'm so glad that everyone is posting pics, stories, vids, and such. I just wanted to say thanks and keep 'em coming!

Anyways, I know that some of you may have already seen this but I'm going to post it anyways. It definitely put me in a sour, fighting mood.

So warning:
